Beyond the Menu at the Nautical Okoboji

Dustyn Wikert and Schuyler Johnson’s friendship took root within the bustling corridors and shared common areas in college. Their connection rapidly grew into an inseparable friendship. Neither could have predicted that their shared experiences within these dorm walls would lay the groundwork for a successful business partnership, starting with the Nautical Okoboji in Arnolds Park. Since then, they’ve expanded their business by adding other local restaurants and even real estate ventures.

But their businesses aren't just about profit margins and balance sheets; they're about breathing life into a town they love.

From a Casual Conversation to Business Plans

Dustyn and Schuyler’s path to entrepreneurship began with a rekindled friendship. After meeting in college they pursued different careers — Dustyn in restaurant management and banking, Schuyler in youth work and real estate.

They bumped into each other years later in Las Vegas and it sparked a casual conversation.

“We were catching up, and I jokingly said we should go into business together,” said Dustyn. “I talked with Schuyler about how to open a business bank account and how I created a business plan that laid out how to purchase Ruebin's Theater in Arnolds Park.”

Schuyler, who had a deep-rooted connection to the Okoboji region, recognized the opportunity and was interested immediately.

They continued their conversation after they left Las Vegas, and after a year of planning, they took the leap and formed a partnership.

A Recipe Interrupted: Bouncing Back From Setbacks

Despite their carefully laid plans, Dustyn and Schuyler’s path to buying Ruebin's Theater hit an immediate roadblock: getting a small business loan.

“The very first bank we went to said they weren’t going to loan us any money,” said Schuyler. “We weren’t sure how to get a small business loan.”

The pressure increased when the owner at Ruebin's Theater gave them a tight deadline.

“There was a signed offer on the table, so we had to figure out how we were going to come up with the money to close the deal or they were going to sell to somebody else,” said Schuyler.

Instead of relying on financing, they began to leverage their network and explore the possibility of bringing in a partner. A pivotal moment occurred when Schuyler ran into Tommy Lustgraaf at a local bar.

“I knew of Tommy, who had experience in the restaurant and bar industry, so we got to talking,” said Schuyler. “He had the financial means to potentially help, so I pitched him our business opportunity. I told him about the bar, and we were able to get the financial backing we needed.”

The three partners launched The Nautical in 2017. Dustyn manages operations, Schuyler handles real estate and Tommy provides legal oversight.

A Strong Banking Partnership Serves Up Success

While their initial venture was launched without traditional bank funding, Dustyn and Schuyler quickly recognized the need for a strong financial partner as they began to expand. They decided to partner with Northwest Bank because of the bank’s personalized approach and commercial banking services.

The responsiveness of the bank's staff, particularly bank president Nicole Evans, played a significant role in solidifying their banking relationship.

“I can text her on a Friday night and she’ll respond back,” said Dustyn. “Even if she's away from the computer. It’s great to know that we partner with a local bank that has our back.”

And the personal connection with the bank staff, especially the tellers at the Arnold's Park branch, creates a sense of community development and trust. This strong banking relationship was crucial in overcoming financial obstacles and supporting their business expansion.

“They’ve helped us grow by providing loans, ACH payments and other valuable treasury management services to help us streamline our operations,” said Dustyn.

The bank’s financial support was critical in their expansion efforts, helping them strategically acquire four other restaurants in the area.

More Than a Meal

Dustyn and Schuyler's vision extends far beyond simply running successful businesses; they're actively crafting a lasting legacy in the Okoboji area.

"We want to be a staple in the community and make something for our kids to be proud of when they're older," said Schuyler.

Their commitment to employees is a pivotal aspect of their success. They began investing in real estate to provide their staff with the opportunity to live in affordable housing close to their workplace. They currently have 130 employees and over the summer that number increases.

"We're always trying to help people get on their feet," said Dustyn. “It’s so rewarding to see our employees succeed both at work and in their personal lives.”

Beyond supporting their employees, Dustyn and Schuyler are deeply invested in the well-being of the Iowa Great Lakes community. They actively collaborate with other local businesses, aiming to create a thriving atmosphere that benefits everyone. Their goal, as Dustyn explains, is “to continue to invest in the community and its people. We want to make Okoboji a one-stop shop for dining and recreation for visitors coming to the area."

Dustyn and Schuyler’s journey from a chance encounter to a thriving enterprise showcases the power of partnership, resilience and community focus, proving that with the right vision and support, anything is possible.
